Grand Theft Auto III is a video game developed by DMA Design and published by Rockstar Games for action-adventure. It was published for PlayStation 2, for Microsoft Windows in May 2002, and for Xbox in October 2003. In 2011, for the fifth anniversary of the game, an improved version of the game was published on portable platforms. It is the fifth title of the Grand Theft Auto series and the first major entry since the Grand Theft Auto 2 in 1999.

Grand Theft Auto 3

Set in the fictional Liberty City, based in New York City, the play follows Claude after he's left for dead and rapidly gets caught up in a globe of gangs, crime and corruption. From a third-person perspective, the play is performed and its world is navigated on foot or by car. The open world layout allows players to roam freely on Liberty City's three islands.

Development has been shared between Edinburgh-based DMA Design and New York-based Rockstar. Much of the design job involved first-time transformation of famous components from the Grand Theft Auto series into a complete 3D world. The game was delayed following the September 11 attacks to allow the team to change references and gameplay deemed inappropriate.

Grand Theft Auto III is a third-person action-adventure game. Players complete missions to advance through the story— linear situations with fixed goals. Several active missions can run at once, as some missions require players to wait for further instructions or activities. Players can freely explore the open world of the game outside of missions and have the capacity to finish optional side missions. Liberty City consists of three districts: Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale; the latter two districts are unlocked as the story advances.

Players can run, jump, or use cars to navigate the world of the game. Auto-aim can be used as help against opponents in battle. If players suffer harm, the use of health pick-ups can fully regenerate their health meter. Body armor can be used in the process to absorb gunshots and explosive damage, but it is used up. When health is completely depleted, gameplay stops, and players are respawning at the closest hospital, at the cost of losing armor and a lot of cash.

If players commit offences while playing, law enforcement agencies of the game may react in the head-up screen (HUD) as stated by a "wanted" meter. On the meter, the displayed stars show the present desired level (for instance, attempts by law enforcement to disable players are becoming very aggressive at the maximum six-star level). Law enforcement officers are going to search for players leaving the desired vicinity. The desired meter enters a cooldown mode and ultimately falls back when players are hidden from the line of sight of the policemen.
